Ringtones are melodic sounds a cellular or cell phone makes when an incoming call or message arrives. Ringtones are stored in an end-user’s mobile telephone, pager or other portable communications device and played whenever the device activates its ring or alert function (upon the arrival of a call, message or other notification). 

Ringtones are an ideal way of soft-launching a record while building up a bit of incremental revenue without the expense of printing and distributing CDs.

iPhone ringtones

iPhone ringtones work slightly differently from other downloadable ringtones. Instead of downloading them via a browser on your actual phone, the most common way is to use iTunes software for downloading the iPhone ringtones. This is basically a way of creating “custom ringtones”.

The standard iPhone format is .m4r. Just download those and drag and drop them into iTunes. Then make sure your iPhone settings are set to copy those to your iPhone automatically.

Mp3 ringtones are very famous nowadays because they are able to produce the real sound of a person or instrument. Also very accurate their dimension is big so you must have a phone with memory card to put your favorites mp3 on.

You can download ringtones directly to your cell phone.

Given the importance of digital downloads, it is surprising that it was left to third parties such as Apple to step into the breach to prove the viability of the digital download model. Legal downloads on the other hand have been driven by the use of ’illegal’ file-sharing networks such as Limewire, and the original Napster. The industry long feared music downloads and spent considerable effort putting barriers in place to protect their copyright.

Fortunately for the music establishment, much of this slack has been taken up by the growth in legal music downloads and ringtones.

Consumers are willing to pay for downloads even when there is an illegal alternative. Even the Jupiter Research survey found that up to 10 per cent of European consumers are willing to pay for downloads.

Also you can search internet for free ringtones. There are many sites with free and legal ringtones. I’ve even found Blackberry ringtones for my Blackberry 7130G.
